En 1867, à Redemption Falls, ville imaginaire dans une région qui rappelle le Montana, dont le gouverneur est James O’Keeffe. Cet Irlandais condamné pour avoir perpétré des attentats contre la Blanche Albion, envoyé en exil forcé en Tasmanie, se retrouve à New York peu avant la guerre de Sécession. Là, il rencontre une belle et riche héritière, cultivée et taquinant la Muse. Entre Julia et lui, c’est le coup de foudre. Mais la lune de miel est de courte durée. O’Keefe sombre dans l’alcool, flirte avec la folie: l’homme ne s’est jamais complètement remis de la guerre.
