Né par une glaciale nuit d’hiver, orphelin dès sa venue au monde, Oliver Twist est un jeune garçon qui subit les nombreux aléas de la rude vie des miséreux londoniens. Ballotté de refuge en orphelinat, il trouve un semblant d’affection et de reconnaissance auprès de monsieur Sowerberry, un croque-mort qui reconnaît en lui un futur associé au fort potentiel. Malheureusement, les jalousies et les mesquineries de son entourage le jettent une nouvelle fois à la rueà Qu’adviendra-t-il d’Oliver ?
