Voici le récit d'une femme en danger, en danger de mort, qui a décidé de parler des quartiers Nord de Marseille où elle a vécu. Elina Feriel retrace son parcours, celui d'une enfant de famille nombreuse, privée de mère, livrée à la rue. Elle raconte le combat que, dès son plus jeune âge, elle a dû mener pour exister dans un quotidien où l'espoir n'est pas permis, où l'insécurité règne, où l'on vit le plus souvent au-dessous du seuil de pauvreté.
Avec une sensibilité à fleur de peau, elle décrit sa rencontre déterminante avec celui qui va devenir son mari. Sa vie pourtant, loin de celle qu'elle avait imaginée avec lui, tourne bientôt au cauchemar, marquée par les cris, les insultes et les coups.
